Theres still a long way to go until Book Expo shows real diversity, but I can offer these 25 books by authors of color featured at BEA 2015. Essays by Funny People on TV This is almost getting large enough to become a real genre. By far one of the biggest draws this year was  Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling after the wild success of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (the new book also seems to suggest Mindys love for question marks). Kaling navigates friendship, romance, beauty, and celebrity in this collection out in September from Crown. Right up there in the buzz-building category is  Modern Romance by stand-up comic and Parks Recreation cast member Aziz Ansari. This book on love looks like a mashup of big data (gathered through interviews and work with top sociologists) and Ansaris  biting wit.  Modern Romance is out on June 16 from Penguin Press, so best get your pre-order on now. Kunal Nayyar, better known to millions as Raj on  The Big Bang Theory, was all over BEA headlines as the Master of Ceremonies for Thursdays Author Breakfast. Nayyars upcoming book is  Yes, My Accent is Real: And Some Other Things I Havent Told You  which  follows him from his New Delhi childhood to his time on the ridiculously popular sitcom. Its been a pretty great year for comedians and actors of color in publishing with the releases of  No Lands Man from Aasif Mandvi and  Im Not a Terrorist, But Ive Played One on TV from Maz Jobrani  exploring topics of race, ethnicity, religion, and nationality. Nayyars book is out in September from Atria Books. Debut Novels Food Whore by Jessica Tom has a different kind of sugar daddy relationship. Tia is just another young foodie in the big city until she makes a deal with a legendary restaurant critic. He has lost his sense of taste and he asks Tia to ghostwrite his reviews for him in exchange for a lot of fancy meals and expensive clothes. Tom is a writer and food blogger who brings an insider knowledge to this juicy tale out in October from William Morrow. Memoirs I spent years wanting to be a doctor when I grew up (spoiler alert: it didnt happen)  and I still have an affection for the medical memoir genre, so I was excited to get a copy of Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctors Reflections on Race and Medicine by Damon Tweedy, M.D. The extraordinary thing about Tweedys book is that it is less about medical anecdotes  and more on just how much race matters for doctors and patients. Out in September from Picador. For another clear-eyed discussion of race in the modern world, theres  Between the World and Me by Ta Nehisi Coates, the popular and controversial writer for  The Atlantic. Coates is poised to be the definitive voice on race in America so theres a lot of interest in this new quasi-memoir that deals with Coates personal history and the charged racial history of the US. September release from Spiegel Grau. There are three more names you may recognize among upcoming memoirs. Actually, you may not recognize the name Sonia Manzano, you probably know her as Maria from Sesame Street. Manzanos upcoming memoir is  Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx. Her memoir covers her difficult childhood through her adulthood as an actress. Out in August from Scholastic, its appropriate for adults as well as children 12 and up.  Keep A Knockin is a memoir out in August from drummer legend  Charles Connor full of inside stories from his life in the music business. Finally, well-known character actor John Leguizamo has adapted his Broadway show  Ghetto Klown  about his life from childhood to Hollywood into a graphic novel with illustrators  Christa Cassano and Shamus Beyale, to be released in October. Pulitzer Prizewinners Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks made an appearance to sign the book version of Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 3). Parks won the Pulitzer for her play  Topdog/Underdog  and her newest play was a 2015 Drama finalist and has been called her best work yet even though its only the first three parts of a nine-play cycle. The play is set during the Civil War and centers around a slave who is offered his freedom to fight for the Confederacy. Fun fact: just because you win a Pulitzer doesnt mean you cant sign a book with little star and heart doodles. Out this month. Oscar Hijuelos died in 2013 and won the Pulitzer for  The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love in 1990. His posthumous novel  Twain and Stanley Enter Paradise  is about the real-life friendship between Mark Twain and explorer-journalist Henry Stanley (the man who uttered the famous line, Dr. Livingstone, I presume?) on a trip to Cuba. Hijuelos had worked on the book for years and finished shortly before his death. Out in November. Recent Releases Not all books featured at BEA are upcoming releases. Sometimes publishers celebrate books theyve just released or books that have been particularly successful. In the former category is  Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis, one of my favorite books of the year so far, which follows the titular group of dogs after two bored gods make a bet to give them human consciousness. For a book about dogs, it has an awful lot to say about humanity and morality and has a great plot to boot. Out now from Coach House Books. Cixin Liu is one of the most popular authors in China. Tor is releasing his Three-Body Problem trilogy in translation in the US, with the second novel,  The Dark Forest, coming this summer. Liu was at BEA to sign the first book,  The Three-Body Problem  which includes Chinas cultural revolution, a secret cabal, a string of suicides, and a virtual reality game- it was one of Book Riots best books of 2014. Another of our best of 2014 picks thats recently out in paperback,  Everything I Never Told You,  brought author Celeste Ng in for a signing. A huge success that ended up being named Amazons Best Book of the Year, theres no sign of things slowing down for this family drama-slash-mystery that looks at a mixed-race family in 1970s suburban Ohio. If you worry that you have too many books in your life and not enough adventure, you may want to pick up the new release from Europa Editions,  Mayumi and the Sea of Happiness by Jennifer Tseng. The book follows a middle-aged librarian whos pulled out of her mundane life and family when she becomes obsessed with a teenage boy and befriends his mother. Billed as a book thats both erotic and meditative, its one I really regret not getting into my suitcase. Young Adult Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon had a line so long I had no chance of getting a copy. Im a little weary of novels featuring characters with strange diseases who cant leave their homes, but Im making an exception for this book. Maddie is allergic to the world. She is also sure she will fall in love with the boy wearing all black who moves in next door. A story told through many media, including diary entries, charts, and illustrations (drawn by the authors husband), Im really excited for its release in September from Delacorte Press. Adi Alsaid made a big splash with his debut, the road trip YA  Lets Get Lost, that got plenty of John Green comparisons. His new novel,  Never Always Sometimes,  follows a pair of best friends who write down a list of high school clichés and vow to avoid them. Until they decide maybe it would be fun to do them all. I love the premise, since some YA can rely too strongly on those clichés, and Im excited to see how they get turned on their head. Out in August. Book Riot Live speaker  Daniel José Older was at BEA promoting his upcoming book,  Shadowshaper, out this month. It features fantasy and graffiti and a Latina heroine and magic and a very, very long list of glowing reviews and blurbs that give it a spot on anyones summer reading must list. Buy it. Then see if you can get him to sign it when youre hanging out with him in November. More Happy Than Not  by Adam Silvera brings a little magical realism to the difficult life of Aaron Soto, a gay, Latino teenager in the Bronx. Theres a new memory-relief procedure that could help him forget all the things that have made his life so tough and help him be someone newer and better. But it could also mean he loses his new love interest and even his own identity. Like the other YA titles here, it also comes with impressive blurbs and some great buzz. Historical Fiction The Book Riot crew noticed a lot of big, big books at BEA this year and one of them was The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee. If the thought of 576 pages intimidates you, dont worry, its not out until February so you have some time to prepare. Chees second novel is about a French opera star looking back on her unlikely rise to fame as she tries to find out the anonymous author of an opera based on her own life. Also, just look at that cover! The Distant Marvels by Chantel Acevedo is set during Hurricane Flora in 1960s Cuba. The book centers around Maria Sirena, a storyteller who may be telling her last story during the deadly storm. Her story goes back generations to trace her family and her country through decades of war and trouble. A modern riff on Scheherazade that celebrates the art of the story. Thrillers Its not much of a surprise that both of the foreign thrillers on this list are from Soho Crime, an imprint doing a fantastic job finding stellar crime fiction from around the globe.  Smaller and Smaller Circles by F. H. Batacan has been called the first Phillipine crime novel. Its a literary noir set in a community so poor they live in and scavenge off a massive dump site. After a string of murders, the only one who can help is Priest-slash-Forensic-Anthropologist Father Gus Saenz. Now that is a detective I dont think Ive seen before. Im really intrigued. Out in August. The Gun  is the debut novel by Fuminori Nakamura and the fourth that Soho Crime has released. And Soho says there are more novels on the way as they continue to have them translated.  The Gun  combines the feel of old school noir but places it in a modern world of cell phones and puts a college student at its center. Guns are illicit and dangerous items in Japan, viewed very differently than they are in the US, and when Nishikawa finds one on a dead body, he takes it and it becomes the source of a growing obsession. I am really excited about so many of the books on this list. But Id be even more excited to go to BEA next year and see more panels featuring authors of color, and more books by authors of color featured prominently. ____________________ Book Riot Live is coming! Sex is enjoyable and a pleasurable experience and when you find that one person that you want to share yourself with it is one of the most emotionally, physically, and mentally connecting moments to your partner. I myself have never had sex but from my experience, I have seen too many friends think they are ready and find out that they are not. After the fact of sharing themselves with someone, a lot of them want to take that one moment back. But it can never be taken back. Disadvantages of being abstinent are that it requires a lot of restraint and self- discipline, clear communication with your significant ther and the risk of having unprotected sex if by chance the commitment you made with your significant other falls through. From my experience being abstintent is hard because you want to show your significant other some type of affection and let them know that you care but those things lead to others and you can find yourself struggling to remain abstinent as you promised. Advan tages are that there is no cost, no risk of pregnancy, and protection from STIs. I hope that you as my child choose to take abstinence. It would give you a chance to live life without the complications of what sex has to offer. My last sexual ethic is that oral sex (cunnilingus, fellatio) and anal sex (anilingus) are also forms of sex. A lot of people do not consider it to be so. Some couples use anal sex as a substitute for intercourse. Some couples who have made a decision to avoid intercourse either due to personal moral beliefs, not wanting to worry about getting pregnant, or the desire to wait until a later point in time for intercourse will decide to use oral/anal sex as a way of exploring sexual intimacy without actually having intercourse. But one thing that many people forget is that STIs are more easily spread through having sex in these methods. When it comes to oral sex especially, people run into the problem of the transmission of almost all STIs, including HIV, hepatitis B, and human papilloma virus. One can also damage the rectal walls allowing contact of the inserting partner’s semen with the receiving partners bloodstream. What has been helpful in helping me decide what I wanted as my sexual ethics is that I was always able to openly ask my parents questions and if they did not know the answer to my question they would research for me or buy me a book on the subject so that we could talk and discuss the subject. It was kind of difficult to write this paper because if I could just have one sexual ethic to write about it would be abstinence because you do not have to worry about pregnancy or STIs if you are not engaging in things of the sexual nature. Even though staying abstinent is hard and very difficult I definitely stand by it one hundred percent. The narrators imagination is something that John expects her to control and change, his constant disapproval of her true personality is unavoidable. She does not disagree with John  actively or in an upfront manner, even within the text. The houses features, especially the wallpaper, can be seen as a symbol for the narrators marriage and general feelings. John chooses for the two of them to live in the upstairs nursery, while the narrator preferred the prettier downstairs. I dont like our room one bit. The narrators distaste for the nursery could also symbolize the fact that she did not want to have a child in the first place, which is also evident in the fact that she does not refer to the baby by name or show any desire to interact with it. Their room and shared space could be interpreted to mean their marriage, where it seems that she spends a lot of time alone. Even when attempting to describe John in a positive loving way such as, He is so careful and loving, and hardly lets m e stir without special direction the narrator manages to imply that this is irritating and stifling. This isnt genuine pleasure in this attention. She is not openly rebellious, yet her feelings of unhappiness towards male dominance cause her to feel ungrateful because she is aware of the role women are supposed to happily play. She feels trapped, her unwanted nursery room is ugly and the windows are barred. This was once a precaution for children inhabiting the nursery, but now makes a cage like environment for the narrator and serves as a constant reminder of children. It also is a blatant symbol of the fact that the narrator is caged within a life she has no control over. Her hatred of tire room is intensified by her disgust with the wallpaper. She describes it as committing every aesthetic sin. At first glance, the wallpaper may be seen as insignificant. But upon closer inspection it can be obviously interpreted as a symbol for her marriage. She calls the wall paper dull but irritating, John is either leaving her which is boring or trying to control her life which is annoying. The narrator spends a countless amount of time studying the wall paper, I start, well say at the bottom, down in the corner over there where it has not been touched, and I determine for the thousandth time that I will follow that p ointless pattern to some sort of conclusion. This passage despite how frustrated she is, she continually complains of feeling a lack of strength. She is unable to truly change her situation and feels defeated by this. John makes assumptions and assertions such as You know the place is doing you good,  while the narrator is slowly slipping into madness. It shows his ignorance towards his wifes situation, and mens general ignorance of the well being of women. Also it makes it obvious that one person shouldnt be making decisions for someone else, which was a major cause of unhappiness for women when men were accepted by society as the dominant gender. The narrator feels separated from her husband, there is a disconnected displayed by their inability to communicate, his lack of awareness of their needs and their marriage as a whole. The fact that the narrator has been put in this room, symbolically her marriage, angers her and she makes this known I would not be as silly as to make him uncomfortable just for a whim. He makes her stay upstairs just because that is his preference, when he is often away. The narrator describes the wallpaper and her feelings towards it by saying, I get positively  angry with the impertinence of it and everlastingness. Her marriage is something she cannot escape from, and she has no choice in the matter. The word choices made in this part of the story intensify the feeling of unhappiness, words such as inharmonious and sentences like ravages  the children have made here they must have had perseverance as well as hatred convey a negative image. Yet as much as there is the narrator fights against the oppression of men there are moments within the text where she doesnt do a very good job of making her case. And dear John gathered me up in his arms, and just carried me upstairs and laid me on the bed, and sat by me and read to me till it tired my head At times like this she enforces the idea that she is a child and needs to be babied. If this is the way she behaves than it is no wonder that he treats her the way he does. As much as the oppression is created by men it is accepted and at times encouraged by women. Her tears and weakness are leading towards a mental breakdown. She begins to see a woman in the pattern, stooping down and creeping about. If her marriage is the wallpaper, than the woman behind it can be seen as the narrators subconscious. Her growing unhappiness makes the woman more and more noticeable. She lacks purpose, as she is not allowed to write, and this causes her over active imagination to engage. Her woman behind the pattern feels as she does, the faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just as if she wanted to get out. The narrator desires to shake off her marriage as the woman tries to shake the pattern. The use of the word pattern is no accident either, as these types of relationships are the typical pattern followed by society at his time. As time progresses the narrator sinks deeper into her obsession with the woman in the wallpaper, perhaps her only means of escape from a situation she cannot change. Finally the narrator gives way to madness, ripping at the wallpaper and creeping around the room causing her husband to faint. She hasnt managed to escape the confines of her relationship, yet she is attempting to free the woman from behind the pattern of the wallpaper. Her obsession with the wall paper is directly correlated to her desire for control within her life  and relationships, she can assert her dominance over the wall paper yet she is incapable of changing her relationship.

Theories of Relativity

Waheed Ahmed The book I have chosen to complete my ISP journal on is Theories of Relativity by Barbara Haworth-Attard. The second half of the book begins with Dylan planning a trip to Murdock to try to move in with his grandparents. However, this plan fails miserably when he discovers that his grandmother has died and his grandfather is soon to follow. His situation only worsens when he returns to Toronto; Dylan is brutally beaten by Brendan’s men for his attempt at running away with Jenna. To help cope with the pain of broken bones and sore muscles from the beating, Dylan accepts some mysterious pills from Jenna. He soon becomes addicted to them and longs for more. He then realizes that he has been betrayed by Jenna and soon finds himself indebted to Brendan. Due to the severity of these events Dylan begins to reflect on the type of life he is living. He is fed up and realizes he needs to turn his life around. After being denied another loan from Glen, Dylan takes the first step to turning his life around by accepting a job offer as tutor at a computer lab. The main themes of this book would be family relationships, homelessness, nature versus nurture and always staying true to one’s moral values. Dylan’s character is very similar to another character named Jesse Pinkman from the television series â€Å"Breaking Bad†. Jesse is a drug addict and a recent high school dropout. Jesse finds himself living in the streets after his parents refuse to financially support him. Jesse’s parents forbid him from reentering their household because they believe he will act as a negative influence on their seemingly perfect son, Gale. However, Jesse has a very good relationship with his younger brother. Interestingly, Jesse feels as though Gale is his personal responsibility once he discovers that Gale is experimenting with marijuana and headed towards a bad pathway. The relationship between Jesse and Gale is almost identical to Dylan’s relationship with Micha and Jordan. Jesse feels responsible for Gale because he has experienced that lifestyle and wants to ensure that Gale doesn’t follow in his footsteps. Both Dylan and Jesse feel that the parents are not doing a suitable job and want to intervene for the betterment of their siblings. Making the connection between these two very similar characters allows one to make a more accurate judgment towards why people act the way they do. This connection helped me see another side of Dylan and understand why he cared so much about the wellbeing of Micha and Jordan. All his efforts were to ensure that they did not end up in his situation. On that same note, Jesse had made the mistake of experimenting with drugs and didn’t want his brother to make the same mistake. A major difference between both these characters is that Jesse’s parents were very supportive and helpful, whereas Dylan’s were the complete opposite. Ultimately it did not matter how their parents raised them because their environment would mold them into different people. Personally, I can also relate to how Dylan and Jesse felt about not being able to help their siblings. In my case, my cousin’s parents were not very strict on practicing Islam, the religion that we both shared. I felt as though it was my duty to educate my cousin about the basic principles of Islam because I felt he was deprived of something truly valuable. He was labeled a â€Å"Muslim† but did not have the basic understanding of what it meant to be one. However my efforts rendered useless as my aunt did not appreciate me teaching her son about Islam because she was Christian and her husband did not have a say in the matter. It was not my obligated duty to help my cousin; nevertheless I only took the responsibility because I felt his parents were not doing a suitable job of educating their son about either religion. I felt like the parents were just an obstacle between me helping someone. Ultimately, the parents had more authority than me so I was to do what they asked. This experience helped me understand the mindset of both Dylan and Jesse. No matter how much Dylan detested drug abuse, ultimately it was not in his control. He became addicted to drugs due to the environmental circumstances. This is the subject of nature versus nurture that Theories of Relativity is structured around. The author shows the reader how an environment such as Dylan’s can change any person regardless of race, gender and certainly not age. The author demonstrates just how vulnerable the human mind is to assimilation. The messages the author conveys can also apply to the real world situation of homelessness. Society doesn’t realize the harsh realities of living on streets and our views are solely based on what we see visually and what the media feeds us. Over 7 000 people are homeless in Toronto as of 2012. After doing some research, I was astonished by how accurately the author has depicted the issues discussed in the book. Issues like prostitution, drug abuse and homelessness are very prominent in my own city! The author also raises many important questions in the book. For example, can an immoral deed like stealing be justified if it is committed when one is severely desperate? Normally I would automatically disagree because taking someone else’s belongs is extremely wrong. However, in Dylan’s situation he only stole exactly what he needed to survive, basic necessities. He would steal when he was desperate and there was no other option. In my eyes, if you are young and healthy, like Dylan then you have the ability to work and support yourself. Based on the book, I believe Dylan did not persevere as he stopped trying after his first job interview failed. If Dylan kept trying he could have been hired and in doing so he could have avoided many problems. On the other hand Dylan had the option of many other illegal and immoral sources of income like selling drugs but he stood true to his morals and declined those offers. In relation to the real world I think that the government should create more programs aimed to help under-aged homeless people. These programs should be more inviting to the homeless and serve as a viable escape route from the street life. It is ridiculous that in a developed country like Canada over 300 000 people are homeless! (Bri Trypuc â€Å"Homeless in Canada†) I think after reading this book, we as a society should come together in collaboration and help these homeless people get off the streets and become contributing members of society.
